Squirrels are found all over the world except Australia. You can find a lot of weird looking animals down under, but no squirrels are there. They are a fascinating animal. There are a lot of things that many people do not know about this “Uninvited visitor” of their tree house.

Appearance
Squirrels are small in size, they have a rather large tail compared to their small body. The tail is bushy. Squirrels appear larger than actual size because of the tail.

Biology
Female Squirrels give birth after 46 days of pregnancy. Squirrel babies cannot see until they are eight weeks old. Female Squirrel can give birth up to eight babies at a time. The baby Squirrels are referred to as kittens. These kittens stay with their mother until they are two months old.

Life Cycle
A large number of Squirrels die within a year of their birth. Squirrels, however, can live up to 10 years in the wild. Squirrels are born in the month of February or March. It is only the mother who is responsible for the baby. The babies are completely dependent on their mother until they are a couple of weeks old.

Habitat
Squirrels are land animals. There are a lot of different types of Squirrels found. Grey Squirrels live mostly around North American countries. In Europe red squirrels are found. The red squirrels are also seen around Asian countries and Russia. The largest Squirrels are found in African jungles. Squirrels mostly live on the trees. Grey Squirrels prefer living in moist conditions. The flying squirrels live in forests. Chipmunks, a type of Squirrels live near the ground. There are more than 250 different types of Squirrels and they all have different habitats. The grey squirrels are the only types of Squirrel which prefer living in human houses.

Diet
Squirrels eat nuts, fruits and small insects. They also eat eggs sometimes. Squirrels are clever and intelligent animals. They collect food for the cold months.

Behavior Squirrels are very fast. It is hard to catch them. They are also extremely intelligent. They know how to store food for future. Squirrels are not furious in general. But if they think that their lives are in danger then they can attack. Squirrels make a lot of noise during their meeting season. Female Squirrels are nurturing while males are not.
